Navigating the Choice between PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM

If you’re unsure whether PRINCE2 Agile or AgilePM is the right course for you, you’re not alone. Many professionals struggle with this decision.

To help you make the right choice, we’ve compiled some guidance on both courses.

For more information, keep reading or check out our webinar with Keith Richards (Lead Author of PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM) for a comprehensive comparison of the two frameworks.

Video

Keith offers guidance on selecting the most appropriate agile project management methodology in this video. He examines the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and provides insight on how to run projects effectively using agile, regardless of the approach being used.

The following topics are discussed in the video:

  • How can agile project management be integrated with Scrum and Kanban?
  • How does an agile project differ from a traditional project? And how is it the same?
  • What is the role of a Project Board or Steering Committee when using agile?
  • Why does the Product Owner role need to change when running a project?
  • How is the Scrum Master role related to the Project Manager role?
  • What steps should be taken to ensure that essential agile behaviors are being followed?
  • Additionally, guidance is given on the respective exams for each approach, along with tips on how to pass them.

What is AgilePM?

Agile Project Management (AgilePM) is a widely used project management methodology that is designed to help organizations deliver projects in an agile environment. It was developed by the Agile Business Consortium to provide a structured approach to managing agile projects.

AgilePM certification is provided through APMG International, with two levels of qualification available:

AgilePM examinations are managed by PeopleCert on behalf of AXELOS.

With PRINCE2 Agile, you’re not working with a standalone methodology, but rather with PRINCE2, which has been tailored and personalized for use in an agile setting.

PRINCE2 Agile vs AgilePM: Key Differences

Both PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM are designed to manage projects in an agile environment. Despite their differences, both approaches have a similar goal.

Each framework has a defined process or lifecycle, clear roles and responsibilities, and guidelines for delivering products. They also offer a range of tools and techniques for managing projects effectively.

How Scrum and Kanban Fit In

Scrum and Kanban are not agile project management frameworks, but they can complement both PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM. While you cannot manage a project using Scrum or Kanban alone, you can integrate them into either approach.

Which is best – AgilePM or PRINCE2 Agile?

In the agile project management market, both AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile methodologies are well-known and have earned credibility over time. However, which one you choose depends on your organization’s goals and current situation.

Which is best for individuals?

For individuals looking to improve their skills and achieve certification, we recommend the following:

  • If you have already completed a PRINCE2 certification, then PRINCE2 Agile is the way to go. This approach builds on your previous knowledge of PRINCE2 and provides greater flexibility for agile contexts.
  •  If you do not have any PRINCE2 qualifications, AgilePM is the more popular option and is more likely to appear on job advertisements.

Choosing Between AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile for Organizations

When it comes to choosing between AgilePM or PRINCE2 Agile for your organization, it’s important to consider your current situation and goals.

It’s not possible to say which one is better because the decision should be based on your organization’s unique circumstances. Factors such as your current way of working should be taken into account:

  • If you are already using PRINCE2, then it would be best to adopt PRINCE2 Agile.
  • If you have an existing agile project management process, it’s recommended to look at both frameworks to see if they can provide options to enhance your best practices.
  • If you’re starting from scratch, AgilePM is a credible and cost-effective option that has been around since the mid-nineties.

While PRINCE2 Agile is more recognizable worldwide as a “brand” and has more comprehensive guidance on agile methodologies, AgilePM can be the quicker and cheaper option for organizations.

Other Agile Project Management Certifications

While AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile are well-established agile project management approaches, there are other certifications that you can consider. The Project Management Institute (PMI), which is widely known in North America has its own agile ‘add-on’ called PMI-ACP that organizations can use to incorporate agile practices into their project management approach.
